September 2, 2006 - Civil War Re-enactment Encampment- Labor Day Weekend event in Huntington Central Park behind Central Library. Costumed actors portray the mid-1800 Civil War era in which many Californians traveled east to participate in. Central Park is transformed into a battleground between the Artillery and Infantry with combat, cannon fire and encampments. A special twilight concert will be held on Saturday. Also on site will be vendor booths featuring books, period costumes and even youth dressed to the era. The event is sponsored by the Huntington Beach Historical Society. Schedule: 9:00 am - 10:30 am - Free Public Tours leaving every 15 minutes from the Walkbridge in the south parking lot of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve; 10:00 am - 12:00 noon - After your tour, walk the renovated 1.5 mile loop trail; 12:00 noon - Meet us in the north parking lot on Warner Avenue near PCH as we celebrate the completion of the Restoration Project and thank our members and the public for their support. Appetizers, beverages and cake will be served. Members of the Amigos de Bolsa Chica will celebrate 30 years at the Bolsa Chica Conservancy Interpretive Center. The Amigos was founded in 1976, and "their goal was to first save, then preserve for future generation, restore and now make sure that the wetlands are expertly managed by the Department of Fish and Game," said Shirley Dettloff, former Huntington Beach mayor and Coastal Commission member. Tours of the Bolsa Chica will be conducted from 9 to 11 a.m. near the walk bridge on Pacific Coast Highway.
