Shipley Nature Center Earth Day Celebration - Spring Plant Sale and Open House. The Friends of Shipley Nature Center host a native plant sale and open house. California Native Plants will be for sale all day. Learn how getting rid of your lawn and replacing it with California Native plants will attract good insects and feed the birds and butterflies to make your garden a wonder of nature. Kids can learn about which native plants will attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Visit the Walk-in Butterfly House to see the Monarch caterpillars and butterflies close up. Learn how to bring these wonderful creatures to your own home garden. Nature Hikes with Shipley Docents will be scheduled during the day. Learn about the flora and fauna that make up Shipley’s 18-acres. Visitors can wander the trails to discover Blackbird Pond, the Redwood Grove and other California habitats. Visit the Composting Exhibit to see how worms eat kitchen waste and make great fertilizer for your garden. Learn how to compost in your own backyard at the Composting Seminar starting at 2 pm. (Registration required for seminar, $10 per person. Huntington Beach residents get a $50 voucher toward the purchase of a composting unit.)
