September 19, 2009 Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. Cities around the globe are pitching on the 25th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. California Coastal Cleanup Day is the premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment in the country. In 2008, more than 70,000 volunteers worked together to collect more than 1,600,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches and waterways. California Coastal Cleanup Day has been hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as "the largest garbage collection" (1993). Since the program started in 1985, over 800,000 Californians have removed more than 13 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines and coast. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by The Ocean Conservancy and taking place on the same day, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events of the year.

September 19, 2009 Huntington Beach City Surfing Contest. City Surfing Championships are limited to Huntington Beach residents that reside in the Huntington Beach Union High School District. Freestyle divisions for Super Masters, Grand Masters, Seniors, Masters, Men, Juniors, Boys, Women and Menehune, with winners getting trophies. All participants will receive a t-shirt with a special surf logo. Sponsored by Huntington Surf and Sport and Duke's, registration is limited to the first 175 people. Time: 8 a.m. Cost: $30/person. This free tour offers invites you, the public to join the docents at the south lot of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, across the street from the main entrance to Bolsa Chica State Beach. Docents are stationed on or near the footbridge entrance to the restored Bolsa Chica wetlands. Tours begin every 15 minutes and five areas of interest are included in the presentation: history, birds, endangered species, ecology and restoration. This free tour is on a first come, first served basis. This is a wonderful opportunity for vacationers, students, small groups and local citizens to visit our valuable resource. September 19, 2009 Wetlands viewing - Birders, nature lovers and the curious are invited to drop by the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, one of the West Coast's significant flyways for migrating birds. Bring binoculars to enjoy even closer views of these soaring creatures. Location: Pacific Coast Highway between Seapoint and Warner on the east side of the highway.
