March 30, 2005 Big Bands - Big Band Swing Nite w/ The Golden west COLLEGE
Lab Band featuring the 17 piece orchestra, Band Leader: Tom Kubis. Big
Band/Swing/Jazz/Latin. Tom Kubis is one of the most sought-after and
prolific writers and arrangers for big bands in North America. He has his
own big band in Orange County/Southern California, employing
cream-of-the-crop sidemen from the area. He co-runs a big band with
celebrated trumpeter/comedian and actor Jack Sheldon. He is also responsible
for a major part of the library for Bill Watrous's excellent Refuge West Big
Band. Kubis's career spans several
decades and includes concerts and acclaimed success with numerous releases
such as Keep Swingin', Tom Kubis Big Band Plays Steve
Allen, Slightly Off The Ground and Jazz Musician's Christmas: The Tom Kubis
Big Band. Born in 1951 in Los Angeles, California, after studying music,
Kubis began playing tenor and soprano saxophones with various bands. He also
played piano for Bobby Vinton. Not only has he succeeded as a musician,
however, Kubis's compositions and arrangements are in great demand with big
band leaders. Tom Kubis formed his own big band, attracting the attention of
Jack Sheldon who became an informal co-leader of the band. Apart from
writing for the band, Kubis continues to provide charts for others,
including Bill Watrous, the BBC Radio Big Band, and his work is also
performed by youth and college bands in the USA and UK. While his writing is
always lively, entertaining and often challenging, musicians and audiences
alike love the complexity of his arrangements. Kubis's own recording career
has held second fiddle to other projects but his artistic talent has shaped
the jazz scene and puts him on the chart as one of the greatest jazz
composers, performers and conductors today. Also see Tom Kubis on May 23,
2005. Time: 8:00PM. No Cover: $10/minimum order per person. Location:
